Change CIP Code Request

STEM innovations have been and will continue to transform the accounting profession. Our curriculum has continued to evolve to prepare our students for this new reality. The change we are requesting is required in order to align the CIP code with our instructional emphasis in the School of Accounting graduate curriculum in the MAcc program, which includes changes in the curriculum that place increased emphasis on STEM topics and skills. For example, we now provide the following courses that are expressly related to analysis and data analytics:

ACTG 580 Accounting Data and Analytics I

ACTG 681 Accounting Data and Analytics II

ACTG 682 Accounting Data and Analytics III

Our discipline’s main professional organization, the Association of International Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), recognizing the changing nature of the accounting profession is advocating for accounting programs to be designated as STEM.1 Already, more than 80 universities have designated programs in accounting as STEM (see attached excel workbook). Relative to students who graduate from these otherwise comparable programs, our MAcc program and its students are currently at a disadvantage.
